Frankfurt International Airpot Hahn (Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn) is the second airport serving the city of Frankfurt.
The airport is situated 120 km from Frankfurt, and has been subject to a huge development in recent years, thanks to the low cost companies (Ryanair above all) which chose to establish their base here. In 2001 there were 450000 passengers using this airport, whereas today they became 4 millions!.
It must be said that the airport Hahn is quite far from the city centre, and it takes no less than 2 hours by bus or by car to reach the downtown, but still it remains the cheapest option if you plan to reach Frankfurt by plane. And if you book in advance you may even fly for free!
The airport is very clean and well organised.
Security controls are scrupulous, with no tolerance in regards of hand baggage regulations.
A bit of history
before being converted into a passenger airport, Frankfurt Hahn has served for a long time as a NATO military base. Toward the end of the Cold War, the base was dismantled by the German State, and in 1993, with the support of the company Fraport AG, it was definitively converted into a civil airport.
